This week we played all jazz, in honor of the Mardi Gras festivies in New Orleans- the birthplace of jazz. I’ve just recently acquired three new fantastic jazz records for kids, including Coal Train Railroad’s debut (pictured above). More about those below. We started a little early and played the new stuff, some classics, a hard to find live recording of Sun Ra, a whole lot of SCAT, the story of “Sylvester the Seal,” and some jazz influenced kids music faves. We finished late. Here’s our line-up:
Carmen McRae– “When the Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbin’ Along”- v/a Jazz for Kids: Sing, Clap, Wiggle and Shake
Dog On Fleas– “Balloon Man”- Beautiful World
Sun Ra and his Intergalactic Arkestra– “Zip A Dee Doo Dah”- Second Star to the Right (Salute to Walt Disney)
Oran Etkin with Charenee Wade– “Little Lamb Jam”- Putumayo Kids Presents: Jazz Playground
Ella Fitzgerald– “Old Mother Hubbard”- Miss Ella’s Playhouse
The Baby Loves Jazz Band– “Scat Song”- Baby Loves Jazz: Go Baby Go!
They Might Be Giants– “Rolling O”- Here Come the ABC’s
Oscar Peterson feat. Clark Terry– “Mumbles”- v/a Jazz for Kids: Sing, Clap, Wiggle and Shake
Eddie Mayehoff w/ All Star Orchestra– “Sylvester the Seal”- Kiddie Records Weekly 2009 (disc 2)
Louis Prima– “The Music Goes ‘Round and Around”- v/a Nicky’s Jazz for Kids
Dean Jones feat. The Felice Bros.- “Lefty Loosey / Righty Tighty”- Rock Paper Scissors
John Upchurch and Mark Greenberg– “A Counting Error”- John and Mark’s Children’s Record
Medeski Martin & Wood– “Let’s Go”- Let’s Go Everywhere
Vince Guaraldi Trio– “Linus and Lucy”- A Charlie Brown Christmas
Coal Train Railroad– “What’s Mine is Yours”- Coal Train Railroad
Astrud Gilberto– “Fly Me to the Moon”- The Silver Collection
Kind of unfortunately, the show ran long, (There was just SO much to play!) and the last two songs got cut off. Never fear, though! We will be playing Coal Train Railroad for the next few weeks. Their new relase is definitely worth tuning in again to hear. If you can’t wait, because sometimes waiting IS hard to do, you could check them out here.
We played a couple of other FANTASTIC new jazz albums for kids, including the one pictured to your left. It comes from Putumayo Records’ long running, spectacular, kids’ series featuring music from all over the world. It’s entitled Putumayo Kids Presents: Jazz Playground. My faves are the Oran Etkin and Charenee Wade track I played, called “Little Lamb Jam,” a GREAT version of “Sing a Song of Six Pence,” and another swell version of “This Little Light of Mine.”
The release pictured to your right comes from The Baby Loves Jazz Band and was put out by the folks who do Baby Loves Disco, in conjunction with jazz great, Verve Records. The “Scat Song” we played comes from the first in their series of jazz records for kids, entitled Go Baby Go.
So, there it is! Hope you enjoy, we had a TON of fun.
